Wimborne
Town 1 V 2 Poole Town - Dorset
Senior Cup 3rd Round Report Courtesy of Matchday Programme What a start on a crisp Dorset evening. In the 1st minute the home side won a left side corner. Poole defended it and broke away. Gary Funnell went down the left side and his pass found Ryan Woolfenden on the left. He ran at the home defence and his pass low across the box was driven home by Richard Glenister from 8 yards out as he won the race to the ball with the home keeper. The ball nestled home just 12 seconds over the 1 minute mark, 0-1. By 5 minutes it was 0-2 with Stuart Brown on the right driving home a superb effort from 15 yards out. Wimborne could count themselves lucky getting to the break just two down but that was the half time score. Half time: 0-2. In the 46th minute the bar denied Gary Funnell a goal via a freekick from 25 yards out. On 81 minutes Poole were caught out by a quick freekick and Paul Rideout in space beat Paul Spillane low from the left side of the box, 1-2. Life then got a little bit frantic until the final whistle saw Poole into the quarter final stage. Poole: Spillane, Hounsell, Spalding, Whitley, Bartlett, Funnell, Richardson, Brown, Woolfenden (Bayston), Phillips (Harris), Glenister (Chivers) |

Bemerton
Heath Harlequins 1 V 2 Poole Town -
Wessex Division 1 On a bitterly cold day Poole Town travelled to the excellent facilities and ground of Bemerton Heath Harlequins for their latest Wessex 1 league match. Chris Knowles completed his first game for the club and looked a very useful addition to the squad in midfield. This was a really entertaining game as both sides continually looked to attack and score. On 8 minutes the home side could have taken the lead. A striker was put clean through one on one with Spillane but the Poole keeper pulled off a fine point blank save and the rebound was hit wide of the left hand post. Four minutes later and again the home side produced a nice move across the face of the Poole area but the resulting shot went wide of the post. Poole took the lead on 19 minutes. Some good work on the right by Stuart Brown eventually saw the ball drop into the box. Danny Hounsell popped up from nowhere and after a shot was blocked he struck the ball with his left foot and it found the far corner of the net - his first goal for the club. Bemerton immediately hit back and on 22 minutes a cross from the right eluded everyone in the box. When the ball eventually came back into the area a shot hit the Poole post and bounced clear. Three minutes later and Poole doubled their lead. After some good passing and pressure Stuart Brown swung a cross in from the right. The ball dropped over the diving keeper but bounced back off the inside of the post to a waiting Leigh Phillips who had the simplest header into an empty net from 2 yards. This was a welcome goal for Phillips who had not scored in the league since Brockenhurst back on the 21st September. Yet again Bemerton attacked straight from the kick off and after a fine block from Whitley a shot from the home side whistled over the bar. The referee (who like the other officials was poor all afternoon) made a shocking decision on 29 minutes. Paul Spillane raced out of his box and made a great tackle to regain possession for Poole. The referee saw it the other way and gave a freekick and a yellow card to the Poole keeper. Surely if the ref had seen it as a foul (which it quite clearly wasn't) then the card should have been red as the Bemerton player was clean through? The last chance of the first half fell to Poole on 40 minutes. Phillips made a great run down the left and he delivered a fine cross to Stuart Brown at the far post but his shot was hit down into the ground and the ball bounced over the bar onto the roof of the net. Half time: 0-2. As expected the home side really went at Poole in the second half but in the main the Poole defending was solid. On 77 minutes a cross from the left saw a header deflected and the follow up shot found the back of the Poole net to reduce the deficit to one. Neal Spalding was then given a straight red card for foul and abusive language - this coming just two weeks after his red card against Winchester City. There is no doubt that Poole's disciplinary record is one of the worst in Wessex 1 but nearly all cards are given for dissent or abusive language and invariably it is Spalding, Funnell or Richardson who seem to pick them up most games. It simply has to stop if we are not to be faced with umpteen suspensions throughout the season. Despite the pressure Poole held on to secure three very valuable away points - a good performance. Poole: Spillane, Hounsell, Spalding, Whitley, Bartlett, Funnell, Knowles, Brown (Chivers), Harris, Phillips, Glenister (Bayston) |

Poole
Town 1 V 1 Winchester City - Wessex Division 1 Poole Town returned to league action against top of the table Winchester City at Tatnam in front of another good crowd of 208. New signing Mick Brown started up front alongside Leigh Phillips. After the 4-0 hammering in the away fixture just two months ago it was important that Poole put up a better performance this time around. From the start it was clear that Poole were going to work very hard to close the space down and try to stop Winchester from getting their passing game going. Whilst this did not make for the most attractive game ever it was certainly effective and Poole more than matched their opponents throughout the game. After making a bright start to his debut, Mick Brown picked up an ankle injury after just 18 minutes and he had to be replaced by Richard Glenister. In a half devoid of any clear cut chances Winchester managed to have the ball in the net twice but both were ruled out for offside. The officials certainly did nothing to help the game as harmless challenges were penalised and some very hard and brutal fouls by both sides went completely unpunished by the referee. Both Funnell and Woolfenden picked up yellow cards for Poole in the first half. On 41 minutes Poole created their best chance of the half when Stuart Brown crossed from the right, Phillips stepped over the ball and Glenister scooped the ball over the bar when a goal looked certain. Half time: 0-0. On 58 minutes Winchester took the lead. A freekick by the left corner flag was crossed in and Jones got up at the far post to head the ball firmly home. Things got worse two minutes later for Poole when Woolfenden committed another foul and picked up a second yellow card and was sent off. Whilst there is no excuse for his challenge, it was borne out of sheer frustration having been fouled just seconds earlier and the referee completely ignoring that offence. Down to ten men and a goal down it now looked bleak for Poole. However, the ten men battled even harder for the last half hour and it was a credit to them that they still covered the pitch in the same way. On 71 minutes Winchester had a freekick on the right and the resulting cross saw a glancing header fall just wide of the left hand post. On 79 minutes another freekick saw the ball drop in the Poole area and a fierce shot took a deflection before cannoning back off the post to safety. As the game entered injury time it really did look like being an undeserved defeat for Poole but still they pressed forward. In the final minute Poole got a corner on the right and as Funnell curled the ball in towards the near post, Glenister nipped in to head home and secure the draw. much to the delight of the Poole supporters. A very good performance from Poole and a world away from the defeat at Alresford last Saturday. Such is the rollercoaster of following the Dolphins! Poole: Spillane, Whitley, Spalding (Bayston), White (Chivers), Bartlett, Funnell, Richardson, S. Brown, Woolfenden, Phillips, M. Brown (Glenister) |

Alresford
Town 1 V 0 Poole Town - Hampshire Senior Cup 2nd
Round Guy Fawkes night turned into a damp squib for Poole Town as they produced one of their worst performances of the season to crash out of their second cup competition in the space of eight days. After the disappointment of the Vase exit last Saturday Poole managed to lose to a team currently fourth from bottom of Wessex Division 2. In a fairly dire match to watch the first half was particularly bad. On 10 minutes Gary Funnell produced another fine strike from a freekick on the edge of the box but the Alresford keeper palmed the ball over for a corner. Chances were few and far between but on 38 minutes Alresford found themselves a man over and after some good passing the final shot was fired low into the bottom right hand corner of the net. There really is nothing else to report on the first half! Half time: 1-0. Whatever was said at half time at least Poole woke up a bit in the second half. Straight from the kick-off and a Poole corner dropped nicely for Stuart Brown but his volley was well saved by the keeper. A minute later and Brown again had a shot but this time the ball went wide of the post. Although Poole dominated the second half credit must be given to the Alresford defence. They battled like terriers for every ball and quite simply they looked like they wanted to win the game more than the Poole players did. The back-biting and arguing between the Poole players set in for much of the second half and this can only have encouraged the home side. Darren Crook made a welcome return to the first team and at least added some quality to the Poole side. Several Poole crosses and corners managed to elude everyone in the box time and time again but they can hardly be recorded as good chances. Another Funnell freekick (sadly Poole's most potent weapon yet again) was tipped round the post on 77 minutes and after that the match fizzled out and Alresford advanced to the next round of the Hampshire Senior Cup. Unless Poole raise their game by 100% on Wednesday night against Fawley they could well find themselves out of the Wessex League Cup as well. Poole: Spillane, Whitley, Spalding, White, Sturgess (Crook), Funnell, Richardson, Harris, Woolfenden, Phillips, Brown (Glenister) |
