Poole Town kicked off their pre-season friendlies with an entertaining 3-1 defeat at the hands of Coca Cola League Division One outfit AFC Bournemouth, in front of a bumper crowd of exactly 1,006 at Tatnam Farm.

James Hayter notched a first half hat-trick for the Cherries but Crispin Rigler, who has just signed for the Dolphins from Hamworthy Recreation pulled a goal back for Poole to make the scoreline a very respectable one for the Wessex League outfit.

The game was played in exactly the right spirit a 'friendly' should be played in, with nobody risking any other players getting an early injury as they prepare for the season ahead.

Dolphins manager Tommy Killick was delighted with the whole day, despite having to return to action sooner than normal.

“The biggest plus for us was the attendance, which was over a thousand,” he said.

“We were expecting around four to five hundred, so to get that many was brilliant for us and it was a good day.

“The weather wasn’t quite good enough for people to go down to the beach but it was nice enough for people to come out, so it was good footballing weather if there is such a thing.

“In an ideal world we wouldn’t have been looking to play a game this early but this was a date Bournemouth had available and obviously we were more than willing to take it.”

Killick admitted that the first half was one-way traffic from start to finish but the second period restored some pride for the newly promoted Dolphins.

He added, “In the first half it was like men against boys for long periods and we didn’t have a shot on goal and I was a bit surprised as to how much they dominated.

“We won the second half 1-0 but they still had the lions share of possession.

“At stages in the first half they were cutting through us at will but, it’s very early for us and you have to take that into account.

“They’ve got some good quality in their side and even though they’ve only been back a short time, their level of fitness was far superior to ours.

“They were sharper and stronger and it was hard work for us.

“I think Shaun (O’Driscoll – Bournemouth manager) was relatively pleased with how things went. He didn’t get any injuries and it all went fairly smoothly, so it would be great if it could become a regular fixture.

“It was very difficult for our forwards. We could have had Ronaldo and Alan Shearer playing up front for us and even then it wouldn’t have done us a lot of good because the forwards didn’t get a lot of the ball.

“In the second half some of our players did well and I thought our goalkeeper Paul Spillane played well. Some of the youngsters played well as well, in Paul Bayston, Dave Sturgess and Carl Chivers.

“I feared for us a bit when we went 3-0 down relatively early and I thought it might have ended up a bit of an embarrassment but it certainly didn’t.

“We’ve got quite a big squad at the moment and we have got competition for places.”

One player Killick is hoping will remain at Tatnam Farm is Frenchman Greg Akcelrod, who at the tender age of just 22 has already turned out for Paris St Germain’s under 21 side and played professionally in Belgium.

Killick explained, “He came over here and is trying to get a club and he will be looking to play at a better level. He’s training with us at the moment and we’ll have to see how it pans out.

“He’s got designs on possibly playing for someone like Dorchester Town or Salisbury.

“At the moment he’s training and playing for us though and he’s staying at my house, so he has to play for us!”

With the season only five weeks away now Poole are looking forward to their first season in Wessex One and Killick can’t wait for the action to start.

“One of the problems I have is that I haven’t been involved in Wessex One football for a long time,” said Killick.

“I’ve watched a few Wessex One games and we played against a few last season but I’m a little unsure as to the kind of step up it’s going to be.

“I know I’ve got players that are more than capable of playing in it though, because I’ve got some players that have played at Southern League level.

“I’ve also got players that haven’t played at Wessex One level before so we’ll have to wait and see.

“If we can start the season well then everyone will be confident and there’ll be a bit of a buzz about the place.

“I’m quietly confident but I am aware that we are taking a step up the ladder and we’ll have to see how we go.

“If I can put out my strongest side then I’m not frightened of any team in Wessex One and I would expect us to be competitive in all our games.

“There will not be one game we will go into thinking that we’re going to get beaten.”

The new season will of course throw up many local derby’s for Poole Town, with matches against Killick’s old team Wimborne Town and games against Bournemouth Poppies and Hamworthy United.

Killick enthused, “To have quite a few games where there will be a big crowd is a Godsend.

“When we play Wimborne, because of the connections, I’m hoping there will be a decent attendance for those games.

“And the same applies to Hamworthy United and Bournemouth Poppies.

“Last year, without sounding arrogant, there was probably only about three teams that we played where we possibly could have lost to but, this season coming, every team in that league is capable of beating us if we don’t perform well.

“I would much rather have that though because when you do win games in Wessex One there will be a much bigger sense of achievement.”

The foundations for a stand at Tatnam Farm are now firmly in place with the stand having been ordered and expected to be erected in September.

The Dolphins boss believes this will enhance the stature of the club and at the same time give a more comfortable afternoon’s entertainment to the more mature of their supporters.

Killick said, “I’m sure they won’t mind me saying it but some of our supporters aren’t the youngest and for them to be able to sit down in comfort for an hour and a half is a good thing and the supporters deserve it.

“They’re a hardy old bunch but to stand out there in freezing wind and rain isn’t much fun. It will be good for them, it’ll be good for the players and it will enhance the atmosphere around the place.”
