On a lovely sunny evening Poole Town travelled to the Wessex Stadium to take on Weymouth Reserves.

Jamie Holland and Andy Culliford made their first pre-season appearances and were both the pick of the players on show for the Dolphins. Despite a promising first half performance Poole Town played deeper and deeper in the second half and this led to some negative and disappointing play. Over the ninety minutes Poole showed some serious defensive frailties, especially after Andy Gater was replaced at the break.

On the plus side Jamie Holland looked particularly sharp up front and scored two superb goals, one a delicate lob on 20 minutes, the other a superb drilled effort from the edge of the box to level the game to 2-2 just before half-time. Between these two goals Holland could have scored twice more when well placed but his overall effort was excellent.

Weymouth themselves managed to score three fine goals and taught Poole a lesson in fast, attacking and direct football - especially during the second half. But for the bar and post the margin could have been greater.

Poole: Spillane, Wardle, Pratt, West, Gater (Jones), Rocher, Culliford, White, Maloney, Rowley (Elmes), Holland

Blandford Army Camp became the venue for Poole Town's first friendly of the new season and still a good few Poole supporters made the journey.

A young Sheffield United side dominated the game for long periods and their ball control, passing, skill and overall fitness was, at times, quite breathtaking. Goals on 35 and 45 minutes saw The Blades reach half time 2-0 up - the second goal being the best of the night. Some tremendous passing from their own box left the Poole players chasing shadows and the volley from the final cross was superbly taken.

Poole hit back early in the second half with one of their best moves of the match.Good work from the right saw Darren Elmes feed John Rowley the ball and his cross was met first time by Tony Avery who side footed home. Poole continued to play some nice football but as the match wore on the Blades' superior fitness told and they scored on 70, 83 and 85 minutes.

This was a good work out for The Dolphins and there was some fine individual performances from Dan West, Martin Jones and Andy Gater. Paul Maloney looked lively in the second half and manager Peter Moore was pleased with the overall effort.

Poole: Randall (Spillane), White (Wardle), Pratt, West, Jones, Gater, Rocher (Maloney), Parkin, Avery, Elmes, Rowley

League News

The Hampshire FA have announced the fixture list for next season. Unlike previous seasons where fixtures were allocated on a month by month basis, they have decided to announce all the fixtures up front. Each club has been told that there will be no switching or rearrangement of fixtures and, given the winter and chaos of last season, this declaration almost defies belief.

They have also decided that they no longer want any information on goalscorers or crowd attendances from next season's games. In effect they only want to know the score and nothing else. It therefore follows that there will be no official detailed statistics recorded for the Hampshire League next season and underlines just how badly this league is run. A year ago the Hampshire FA sought volunteers to help run their ailing website and despite numerous offers of help by this club we did not even get an acknowledgement of our interest. It just gets worse and worse...............
